What We Do

The main focus of Grangetown Boys & Girls Club is to maintain universal open access youth provision. Our mission is to give hope and opportunities to children and young people in South Cardiff, so they fulfil their potential and leave prepared and excited for adult life. The Boys & Girls Club team of youth professionals provides a safe, caring, youth-led space in a disadvantaged inner-city area, where young people can learn, develop and build towards a brighter future. Open-access after-school programmes take place in our two storey-built youth centre in Grangetown. Youth Club activities encompass sport, healthy cooking, music, art, skills development and career pathways. Delivered by our experienced team, the work is child-centred and promotes enjoyment, collaboration and individually tailored support towards personal development. Young people are encouraged to become volunteers, participate in social action, and to use their voices to share their ideas, opinions and needs, which in turn helps us shape the youth programmes.

Current Provisions

We have an exciting innovative programme of youth club activities. We are a youth consortium that works in joint partnership with the National Boys & Girls Clubs of Wales, Horn Development Association, Race Equality First, South Riverside Community Development Centre, Youth Cymru, Youth UK and Cardiff Council Youth Service.  Our team of youth professionals works with young people in a neighbourhood based setting, welcoming young people from the local community to our two-storey building for fun and creative spaces, where they can discover passion, skills and friends.

The Grangetown Boys & Girls Club Youth Project plays a unique roll in addressing the lack of understanding of universal open access youth work. One of our biggest priorities is to ensure that all young people across the area have access to the support of trusted youth workers and structured youth club activities to ensure they have the best opportunities to develop and thrive.  That is why we are working collectively to ensure better investment and support to young people and the youth sector.  Our priority function is to give hope and opportunities to local children and young people, so they fulfil their potential and leave prepared and excited for adult life.

Intergenerational Project Over 60s

Keep Well This Winter is a project that aims to provide information to people over 65 to enable them to keep well during the winter.

Grangetown Youth Work consortium is operating the project within this campaign called ‘BRG Concern’ The aim of this project is for young people over the age of 14 to offer support by offering to visit people over 65 during the winter months and particularly during periods of bad weather. It is recommended that young people offer to visit no more than two older people.

Social Enterprise

The primary function of this scheme is to increase awareness, knowledge and expertise of social enterprise amongst youth work staff, who in turn can teach young people the practical skills needed to enable them to improve their knowledge and understanding of social enterprise and hopefully become entrepreneurs.

The ‘Junior Leaders ’ Group has set up a number of new projects that have added a new dimension to the service provided by the centre and further rooted it in the “youth-community” of the area.

RealCare Baby II, an amazingly realistic infant simulator that offers learning by doing. Baby requires feeding, burping, rocking, and diaper changing on a 24-hour schedule. It offers experiential learning by providing students with experiences that help make informed decisions about parenting. The parenting experience allows students to draw their own conclusions and discover for themselves what the role of parent feels like. It is an authentic task that is very close to the real thing.
